Chapter 4: Above All Else
Time flies when everything works the way it should be. Three months after that fateful night, Elainne was standing at the kitchen sink wiping the dishes clean, singing one of her favorite songs, one that she hadnât sung for a long time. She was almost done when her phone received a text. She looked at the screen, reading out loud the name of the caller.
âTrevor,â she said, singing his name to the music of the song.
Smiling, she wiped the last dish and then washed her hands before checking the message. It was almost time for Tim and Noah to return home from school, and she didnât have time to call him and have a nice chat with him. So she just texted back to him that sheâd call him later.
The next morning, the morning after they first admitted their feelings to each other, Elainne and Trevor had a long talk regarding their relationship. She had made it clear to him that her children were not to be involved in any way in this, and that she would feel safer if they kept it a secret. This town was not big enough, or progressive enough, to handle this relationship. After all, what would her clients think of her if they found out she was having a relationship with a former patient?
Trevor, lost in the fervor of love, quickly admitted to every term that Elainne gave him. Since that day, they started seeing each other, getting more comfortable every day. However, there were times that she wanted to call him in the middle of the night and ask him to come home and share her bed with him. She couldnât have predicted that she would be the one getting impatient, but all this distance between them made her feel lonely at times.
The sound of a key turning, and the heavy, impatient steps of two teenage boys walking inside the house, forced her to return to reality. Then, she heard the two boys arguing. She quickly stood up and followed the angry voices of the two children.
âNo, stop saying that. Mom would never do that!â Elainne got surprised after hearing Noah mentioning her name.
âWell, she did, so get over it.â Tim was using his passive-aggressive tone to further infuriate his younger brother.
âNo, no, stop! Youâre lying!â
âWhatâs wrong with you two? Why are you arguing?â Elainne got startled by the sight of Timâs face. It was full of bruises, spots of dried blood all over his clothes, and his shirt ripped on the side. âWhat the...? What have happened?â
She rushed to her sonâs side, only for him to push her away. âI just had a fight with a guy at school, mom. Donât sweat over it.â
âWatch your tone Tim. What is wrong with you? What happened?â
âThe guy was talking shit about you, thatâs what happened.â
Elainne covered her open mouth with her hand, not able to piece out what was going on. âCan you please explain all this to me?â
He sighed, glancing his mother and his kid brother one after the other.
